Common stove and cooktop problems we fix
- Gas burner won't light or keeps clicking
- Wet or dirty igniters, misaligned burner caps, clogged ports or a failed spark module.
- Weak, yellow or uneven flame
- Blocked burner ports or a poor air mix. Yellow flames can mean incomplete combustion, so have it checked.
- Electric burner won't heat or only works on high
- A burned-out element, damaged receptacle or failing infinite (control) switch.
- Induction zone not detecting the pan
- The pan isn't magnetic or is the wrong size, or an induction coil or power board has failed.
- Touch controls unresponsive
- Lock mode, moisture on the panel, or a touch control board failure.
- Error code or beeping
- Overheating, a cooling fan failure, or a sensor or board fault.
- Cracked glass top
- The glass needs replacing. Don't use it cracked, as spills can reach live wiring.

Try these first
Some stove and cooktop problems have a simple fix. Before you book, check:
- Dry and reseat burner caps after a spill. Misaligned caps are the most common reason a gas burner won't light.
- Clear burner port holes with a straightened paper clip (not a toothpick, which can break off inside).
- Turn off a coil burner, then push it back in firmly. Swap it to another spot to see whether the coil or the socket is bad.
- Test induction cookware with a magnet: if it doesn't stick to the bottom of the pan, the pan won't work.
- Check the breaker and look for a control lock icon on the display.
Still not working? Call us and we'll diagnose it properly.
Safety first. If you smell gas, don't turn anything on or off and don't use your phone inside. Leave the house and call SoCalGas at 1-800-427-2200 (or 911) from outside. Once it's safe, we can repair the cause.
Repair or replace?
Stoves, cooktops and ranges commonly last about 13–15 years. If a repair costs more than half the price of a new one and yours is past about half that lifespan, replacing may be the better value. Otherwise, repair usually wins, and we'll give you an honest recommendation either way.
Stove & Cooktop Repair FAQ
What's the difference between a stove, a cooktop and a range?
A cooktop is just the burners, built into the counter. A range is burners and an oven in one unit, and "stove" is the everyday word for either. We repair all three; see our oven repair page for wall ovens.
Why is my gas stove flame yellow or orange?
A healthy flame is mostly blue. Yellow or orange flames usually mean clogged ports or a poor air mix, which can also produce carbon monoxide, so have it checked.
Can a cracked glass cooktop be repaired?
The glass can't be patched, but the top can be replaced on most models, which is usually far cheaper than a new stove or cooktop.
