Try these first
Some dishwasher problems have a simple fix. Before you book, check:
- Pull out and rinse the filter at the bottom of the tub. Most models have a twist-out cylinder.
- Run the kitchen tap hot before starting so the dishwasher fills with hot water.
- Check that the spray arms spin freely and their holes aren't clogged.
- If it was just hooked up to a new garbage disposal, make sure the knockout plug was removed.
- Look for a control lock / child lock setting.

Repair or replace?
Dishwashers typically last about 9–12 years. If a repair costs more than half the price of a new one and yours is past about half that lifespan, replacing may be the better value. Otherwise, repair usually wins, and we'll give you an honest recommendation either way.
Dishwasher Repair FAQ
Why is there standing water in my dishwasher?
A little water in the sump is normal on some models. A pool above the filter usually means a clogged filter, a blocked drain hose or air gap, or a failed drain pump.
Should I repair or replace my dishwasher?
Pumps, inlet valves, latches and heating elements are usually worth fixing. A failed control board on an older, low-cost model can approach the price of a new one. We’ll tell you upfront.
