Common dryer problems we fix
- Runs but no heat
- Electric: a failed heating element, thermal fuse or high-limit thermostat. Gas: a bad igniter or gas valve coils.
- Takes too long to dry
- A clogged lint screen or a crushed, lint-packed vent duct. That’s the most common cause, and a fire risk.
- Won't start
- A door switch, thermal fuse, start switch or tripped breaker.
- Drum won't turn
- A broken drive belt, worn idler pulley or failed motor.
- Squeaking, thumping or scraping
- Worn drum rollers, idler pulley, glides or drum bearing.
- Shuts off mid-cycle
- Overheating from a blocked vent, or a failing thermostat or moisture sensor.
- Gets too hot
- A cycling thermostat failure or restricted airflow. Stop using it until it's checked.

Try these first
Some dryer problems have a simple fix. Before you book, check:
- Clean the lint screen before every load, and wash it with soap now and then if you use dryer sheets.
- Check the outside vent while the dryer runs. You should feel strong airflow.
- Make sure the vent hose behind the dryer isn't crushed or kinked.
- Check the breaker. Electric dryers use a double breaker; if one side trips, the dryer runs with no heat.
Still not working? Call us and we'll diagnose it properly.
Safety first. If you smell gas, don't turn anything on or off and don't use your phone inside. Leave the house and call SoCalGas at 1-800-427-2200 (or 911) from outside. Once it's safe, we can repair the cause.
Repair or replace?
Dryers typically last about 10–13 years. If a repair costs more than half the price of a new one and yours is past about half that lifespan, replacing may be the better value. Otherwise, repair usually wins, and we'll give you an honest recommendation either way.
Dryer Repair FAQ
Why is my dryer running but not heating?
On electric dryers it’s usually the heating element or thermal fuse; on gas dryers, the igniter or gas valve coils. A blocked vent often causes those parts to fail in the first place, so we check airflow too.
Is a clogged dryer vent dangerous?
Yes. Lint buildup is a leading cause of dryer fires. If drying times have crept up, have the vent checked.
