Try these first
Some freezer problems have a simple fix. Before you book, check:
- Check the thermostat dial or display. It may have been bumped. 0°F is the target.
- Inspect and clean the door gasket, and make sure nothing is stopping the door from closing.
- Clean the condenser coils and leave a few inches of space around the unit for airflow.
- On manual-defrost models, defrost once the ice is more than ¼ inch thick.
- Garage freezers: very hot garages can push a freezer past its rated range, so check the manual.

Repair or replace?
Freezers typically last 10–20 years; chest freezers often outlast uprights. If a repair costs more than half the price of a new one and yours is past about half that lifespan, replacing may be the better value. Otherwise, repair usually wins, and we'll give you an honest recommendation either way.
Freezer Repair FAQ
Why is my freezer frosting up?
Most often warm, humid air is getting in through a worn gasket or a door that doesn't close fully. On frost-free models, heavy frost on the back panel usually means the defrost system has failed.
How long will food stay frozen if my freezer stops?
About 48 hours if it’s full and the door stays closed, around 24 hours if it’s half full.
